The Facility Operation System Engineering team is looking for an individual with proven skills to invent, build and support tools in use by the global Facility Operations Center (FOC). This team ensures that the FOC tools remain highly available while looking for new ways to increase speed and accuracy of the FOC’s ability to respond to and remediate losses in datacenter resiliency. The ideal candidate should have a basic understanding of infrastructure, be able to provide clear and concise written and verbal communication, and a good command of various programming languages and internal Amazon tools. This position will help ensure overall reliability and availability by interfacing with other teams and the FOC to drive new innovative projects while looking for ways to simplify existing tools and procedures to delight our customers.

As a Systems Development Engineer you will ensure that FOC systems are designed with high reliability, security, availability, scalability, and low latency from the outset. You will establish development standards, best practices, and drive operational excellence throughout the organization. The relationships you build with peers will help ensure the group is using the right AWS services and methodologies for the company’s scale, while recognizing the unique requirements of the FOC problem space. Additionally, you will:

  • Fully decompose complex problems into simple solutions

  • Engage with teams across Amazon that have worked on similar problems to learn from their effort and discover where we can leverage existing solutions.

  • Set the technical strategy for the team, Be the driver of new technology and Ideas: Our solutions are built on AWS technologies such as Redshift, Glue, Lambda, ECS etc. and open-source software such as Spark, Airflow, etc. In addition to leveraging these fully, you will look for new technologies and continually push the team towards novel and simpler ways to build solutions.

  • Gather business and functional requirements and translate these requirements into robust, scalable, operable solutions with a flexible and adaptable data architecture.

  • Continuously optimize solutions to improve overall Platform performance, availability and fault tolerance

  • Drive Operational excellence through metrics driven approach

  • Mentor and lead developers by cultivating curiosity, deep technical understanding through collaboration, code reviews, and leading by example.

  • Exert technical influence across multiple teams, increasing their contributions by sharing your knowledge and experience

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

  • 3+ years of administrative experience in networking, storage systems, operating systems and hands-on systems engineering experience

  • Experience programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, Ruby

  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • CSSLP (Certified Secure Software Lifecycle Professional)

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $116,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $201,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
