MTHS invites applications for the position of Digital Projects Archivist (Archivist 2). The MTHS Library holds the nation’s largest collection of published materials related to the history of Montana. The collection includes books, maps, pamphlets, posters, periodicals, newspapers, and other resources about Montana, with supporting materials exploring the history of neighboring states and provinces. The person sought for this position will be a positive representative of the Montana Historical Society to the public, and will embody the MTHS culture of excellence, teamwork, professionalism, and passion for the work that we do. Function: The Archives is a department within the Library & Archives Program of the Montana Historical Society. Under the direction of the Archives Manager, this position will be an integral member of the Library & Archives team. The successful candidate will develop digital workflows, including but not limited to born digital archives, the digitization of existing hard copy materials, and the digital preservation of established electronic records. Among other tasks, the ability to exercise sound judgment, be detail orientated, have great time management skills, along with a welcoming and friendly attitude, is important to this position. Other: The Digital Projects Archivist (Archivist 2) will work a 40-hour a week schedule, Monday through Friday. This position is not eligible for telework. The hourly rate of this position will increase by $1.50 per hour starting July 1, 2024, in accordance with HB13. The MTHS, guardian of Montana’s memories, is located in beautiful Helena, Montana. Representative Duties: * Acquire, appraise, and accession digital materials, including born-digital records, digitized documents, photographs, audiovisual content, and other digital assets. * Strategize, develop, and communicate processes for accessioning, ingesting, processing, describing and preserving born-digital material in accordance with archival standards and best practices. * Design and implement digital preservation strategies to ensure long-term accessibility and integrity of digital materials. Addressing issues such as file format obsolescence, media decay and technological changes. * Manage hardware and software necessary for digital preservation and projects, ensure hardware and software are kept up to date and working efficiently. Make recommendations for updates to hardware and software. * Create and manage descriptive, administrative, and technical metadata for digital assets adhering to established metadata standards and schemas (Dublin Core, PREMIS, METS) Digitization Projects Management and Planning: * Develop and implement policies, procedures, and guidelines for digitization of analog materials. * Plan and implement workflow for ingesting, storing, and delivering digital assets and their associate metadata ensuring that the processes adhere to industry standards, maintaining quality and authenticity. * Oversee the digitization of in-house materials, including manuscripts, photographs, and printed materials, and the creation of accompanying metadata. * Coordinate with outside vendors for digitization services and metadata creation, if not able to complete tasks in-house. * Oversee and provide training to other staff, interns and volunteers regarding digitization. Advertised Physical Requirements: * Must be able to climb, crouch, pull, push, reach, stand, engage in repetitive motions including movements of the hands, wrists, or fingers, move, touch including finger dexterity, communicate, hear including receiving detailed information orally or making fine discriminations in sound and see including color, depth perception or clarity. * Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds. * Must be able to move and stand for several hours at a time. Skills: * Thorough knowledge of modern archival theory, standards, and practices and their implementation. * Knowledge of digital preservation platforms. * Knowledge of content management systems. * Knowledge ofestablished metadata standards and schemas (Dublin Core, PREMIS, METS). * An understanding of research methods. * Ability to communicate simple and complex ideas effectively, both orally and in writing. * Knowledge of Montana and western history preferred Qualifications: * Master’s degree in library science or a Master of Library and Information Science or a graduate degree in a related field. * Three years of job-related work experience is preferred. Other combinations of education and experience may be substituted.
