Job Summary:

  • This is a per diem position, weekly scheduled hours will vary based on department needs.

The Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA), works in collaboration with surgeons and other healthcare team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes, according to the Association of PerOperative Registered Nurses (AORN). Under the direct supervision and direction of the operating surgeon, the RNFA functions as an assistant during the course of an operative procedure requiring an assistant. The RNFA will perform only those functions specifically stated in a manner consistent with her/his training. In cases of extreme emergency, when the attending is unable to complete the surgical procedures, the RNFA will maintain hemostasis until another physician arrives.

Job Results & Essential Function

  • Utilizes principles of aseptic technique in creating and maintaining a sterile field.

  • Plans and provides equipment and supplies based on patient and physician needs.

  • Demonstrates competency in assisting surgeon as it relates to unit scope of care.

  • Promotes cost containment while delivering quality patient care within the operating room.

  • Participates in on-call assignments as needed and demonstrates flexibility to cover staffing as needed.

  • Demonstrates flexibility to perform other functions within Surgical Services to assist in the smooth operation of the department.

  • Positioning, skin preparation, draping of patient, assessing patients’ medical, physical, and psychosocial status.

  • Provide homeostasis, wound exposure, tissue handling, and suturing

  • Provides a safe environment for the surgical patient during their preoperative experience.

  • Postoperative patient management in collaboration with other healthcare providers in the immediate postoperative period and beyond including;

  • Writing postoperative orders/operative notes according to established protocols

  • Participate in postoperative rounds

  • Assisting with discharge planning and identifying appropriate community resources as needed

  • Serves as a resource person for other staff members.

  • Demonstrates Competency in providing patient/family education.

  • Serves as a professional member of the OR team.

  • Pursues own professional growth through continuing education and in-services.

  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures; supports the mission of the hospital.

  • High-level interpersonal skills for relating to all levels of professionals, patients and family members

  • Leadership qualities and skills.

  • Ability to work under pressure

  • Maintains either a CNOR or CRNFA certification and may be required to scrub or circulate if available and he/she is not scheduled to assist.

  • Performs pre-operative patient assessment and teaching.

  • Assist with the positioning, prepping and draping of the patient or perform these tasks independently as directed by the surgeon.

  • Provide exposure through appropriate us of instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging techniques.

  • Managing all instruments in the operative field to prevent obstruction of the surgeon’s view.

  • Provides hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels and by other means as directed by the surgeon.

  • Handles tissue as directed by the surgeon during the operative procedure.

  • Performs wound closure as directed by the surgeon; suture the peritoneum, fascia, subcutaneous tissue and skin.

  • Assist surgeon at the completion of the surgical procedure by:

  • Affixing and stabilizing all drains

  • Cleaning the wound and applying the dressing

  • Assists with applying casts or plaster splints

  • Assists with the transfer of the patient from the operating room

  • Performs postoperative patient evaluation and teaching

  • Skill in exercising a high degree of initiative, judgment, discretion, and decision making.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and effectively change priorities as needed.

Requirements

Education & Experience

Graduate from an accredited school of nursing, minimum of three (3) years’ experience in an operating room, scrubbing experience is required, minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a surgical assistant preferred.

Licenses and/or Certifications

  • NYS Registered Professional Nurse license is required

  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider is required

  • Current CNOR certification maintained & CRNFA certification maintained

  • Documentation of continuing education units required for CNOR and/or CRNFA recertification and experience, and maintaining clinical status is required.

Salary Description

Min $39.02/Max $45.14
