Atlantic Health System Registered Nurse, Ambulatory in Metuchen, New Jersey

Principal Accountabilities:

Utilizes nursing assessment skills effectively. Coordinates and completes patient assessment and re-assessment to positively impact on quality outcomes. Monitors effects of medications and reports adverse effects in a timely manner. Assess barriers to learning and functional status of patient.

Consistently demonstrates competent clinical skills. Performs direct patient care activities in support of patient care delivery and team concept. Provides competent and appropriate nursing care to the population. Demonstrates knowledge and skill of emergency equipment and procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of medication administration according to policy. Analyzes situations critically and makes effective clinical decisions which reflect an integration of nursing knowledge and available resources (actual and potential problems). Coordinates, evaluates and completes patient/family teaching. Identifies and reports all risk management issues in a timely manner.

Demonstrates professional practice responsibilities. Assumes responsibility for coordination and completion of all patient treatments and diagnostic process. Demonstrates ability to multi-task, prioritize care and problem solve to meet the changing needs of: (1) individual patient needs, (2) unit activities (3) family/significant other needs. Demonstrates knowledge of policies and procedures. Demonstrates leadership ability. Functions as a resource/mentor and provides support to staff members to resolve patient care and staff concerns/issues. Identifies knowledge/skill gaps and takes an active role in obtaining appropriate education and/or training. Vaccine for children coordination and auditting vaccines. Regularly attends meetings and keeps current with changes in unit function/activities. Able to work and cooperate as a team player.

Specimens and Lab Tests Performs testing as required by visit. Handles all specimens using universal Precautions. Completes lab forms and manages specimens according to guidelines. Assures the physician receives all lab reports in a timely fashion. Special attention given to abnormal results. Monitor all test results ordered on patients and patient compliance. Develop a tickler file to track.

Indirect Patient Care: Responsible for phone management of assigned patients. Triage phone calls utilizing assessment skills to evaluate the patient’s chief complaint and urgency of the problem. Responsible for pharmacy contact, medication ordering and renewal. Reviews and appropriately disseminates labs based on acuity. Triages phone calls to determine acuity to assist in scheduling appointments. Provides comprehensive medical record documentation. Documents all communications and maintains patient confidentiality. Sort fax results, call patients and notify MD or NP as necessary. Take patient phone calls and follow up on results. Develop a work system that will improve time management.

Education: Identifies educational needs of patient and families concerning alterations in health, the disease process and completes nursing assessment of patient. Keep all education materials updated. Provides guidance and counseling regarding wellness, lifestyle, vaccines, disease risks and potential changes in health status to families. Pursues and participates in formal and independent learning activities to enhance knowledge, clinical competency and professional development. Provide patients with education regarding their medical condition. Utilize patient education hand-outs whenever possible and note patient education in RN notes.

Administration: Interacts with all staff members for problem solving. Assists with orientation of new employees. Complies with OSHA, JCAHO, DOH, CLIA and HIPAA guidelines. Acts as a positive role model for other clinical and clerical staff through attitude, performance and appearance. Monitor, order and maintain medical supplies (site specific) Complete patient forms, physical forms, working papers, as needed Perform other duties as assigned by physician, site coordinator or practice manager.

Safety: Recognizes emergency situations and acts appropriately. Clarifies physician orders as indicated. Maintains a safe patient care environment Reports any and all injuries (patient or staff) using appropriate documentation.

Required:

  1. BSN required.

  2. Pediatric care experience

  3. BLS, ACLS required

  4. Vaccine for Children experience

Preferred:

EMR experience

Capable of working in a fast- paced environment while maintaining aseptic technique and providing excellent safe patient care.
