Responsibilities

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) hired into this position will be an integral role across our adult Medical Oncology practice, seeing patients with early and advanced solid malignancies that have developed immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) related toxicities. This clinic will see patients in combination with their tumor specific primary care team to provide expert care in the management of these unique and sometimes complex toxicities. Toxicities can range from mild with focus on symptom management to emergent concerns. Time will be split in this role between seeing patients in the outpatient setting, covering the ICI service pager, and providing collaborative support with inpatient teams for hospitalized patients with severe immune check point toxicities. As this practice evolves we will pilot how to best provide support for inpatient with opportunities being through virtual huddles or potential for in person rounding with the oncology consulting or hospital teams when needed. Time will be built into the schedule for these activities. There is opportunity to leverage remote management to further support cancer patients in the future.

It is an ideal role for a NP or PA to work autonomously, with collaborative support as needed. This is a busy and dynamic practice requiring individuals with excellent communication, time management, flexibility, and critical thinking skillsets. This requires individuals to demonstrate adaptability, leadership skills and a keen interest in quality improvement. The NP or PA serving in this role will see all solid tumor malignancies with immunotherapy toxicities. There will be collaborative support from tumor-specific Oncology consultants, NP or PAs, fellows, RNs, and other supportive allied health staff as needed. There is significant multidisciplinary collaboration with teams such as gastroenterology, pulmonology, cardiology, dermatology, and other medical specialties. This is a growing practice. As the clinic continues to evolve, there will be opportunities to engage in practice improvement and explore additional opportunities to support the oncology patient needs.

The division is very supportive of professional development opportunities. Once someone has established themselves clinically we hope to foster interest and professional growth across the research and education shields as well.
