Responsibilities

Medical Oncology is looking to hire a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) into the Thoracic Oncology Care Team.

This Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) will be part of our adult Medical Oncology outpatient practice, seeing patients with thoracic malignancies including lung cancer, thymus cancer and mesothelioma. The Thoracic Oncology care team is comprised of thoracic oncologists, NP/PAs, pharmacists, nursing, and research team members.

NPs and PAs are an integral part of cancer care at Mayo Clinic Rochester. They see patients at initial consultation and follow established patients, guiding them through their treatment plan in close collaboration with supervising oncologists. The NP or PA manages treatment-related toxicities for patients who are going through standard and research-based cancer treatment, as well as provides care and support for patients during all aspects of their disease course. This includes ordering of curative intent therapy, survivorship care, management of long-term treatment-related toxicities, assessment for cancer regression/progression/recurrence, clinical trials enrollment and end-of-life care.

Due to the complexity and breadth of the patient population, the ideal NP/PA candidate requires a commitment to challenging and complex patients, excellent communication and assessment skills, as well as the ability to balance treatment with symptom management and psychosocial support. The team works in close collaboration with colleagues Pulmonary, Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care and other teams across the cancer service line to provide comprehensive cancer care throughout a patient’s journey. The NP/PA will have a central role on the team to provide continuity for patients, serve as a provider resource for allied health team members and help with coordination of care.

Once the NP/PA is established in their primary role on the lung care team, if practice needs allow, there could be opportunity to spend time in the oncology acute care clinic supporting urgent cancer patient needs.

The division and tumor group are very supportive of mentoring NP/PAs in other academic and research pursuits if it aligns with individual’s interest. We strive to see our Advanced Practice Providers excel in the clinical practice, research, and education shields.

Qualifications

Masters-prepared graduate of an accredited school of nursing and Nurse Practitioner program. Current Minnesota RN license and certification (or eligible to be certified) as a FNP, ANP, or ACNP (certification must be obtained within 6 months of employment date);

or

Graduate of accredited Physician Assistant program with current PA certification by NCCPA and registration as a PA by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice (or eligible). Must be eligible for DEA registration and billing privileges.

Previous Oncology and/or NP/PA experience preferred, but not required.

Current Minnesota registered nurse license. Certified or eligible to be certified as a nurse practitioner before employment date by a national clarifying organization accepted by the Minnesota Board of Nursing. Certain positions may require DEA registration. BLS certification required. Certain positions may require additional life support certification. As of January 1, 2015 a current MN Advanced Practice Registered Nurse license.
